Safety cases.

The project consortium compiles online multimedia safety cases (video, sound recordings, and photos) for training risk assessment.

Safe Isolation – a Virtual Reality case

This VR (Virtual Reality) case study will enable the learners to view and interact with the working environments in the safety of the classroom environment.

Learners should explore at their own pace giving them greater depth of the working environment than traditional resources such as posters, hand-outs and books.

How to watch the VR video:

  • On a computer you can use the mouse to move around the room.
  • On Tablets and Smartphones. The use of hand held mobile devices such as iPhones, iPads or similar devices will give a better result with the ability to use the real time motion tracking sensors. You can download VR viewing apps from Google Play or APP Store

Environmental Risks

A video in which work related actions cause environmental problems. The case is based on the participants watching a video in which they are asked to indicate all the problematic actions for the environment that they observe during the video. It may be necessary to play the video several times so that the participants have time to make note of their observations.

Health and Hazards (in a Welding Workshop)

Participants will become aware of health and hazards at the place of work, namely in work related to welding in a workshop.

Participants will watch a video (Health and Hazards – welding), identify hazards and analyse them. Video link: https://youtu.be/5g-9u2yzMAE

Health and Hazards (in a construction site)

Participants will become aware of health and hazards at the place of work, namely in work related to on-site electrical installations.

Participants watch a video (Health and Hazards), identify hazards and analyse them. Video link: https://youtu.be/JOqNoiY-Crc

Download the case in:

Work Equipment

Participants will become aware of makeshift procedures at the place of work, namely in work related to electrical work and how to avoid them.

Participants watch a video (Work Equipment), identify hazards and analyse them. Video link: https://youtu.be/huQyiFbW3c8

Fire and Emergencies

The case is using a 3D Virtual Reality video where the user can move around a building (on a computer by using a mouse) and make selections by clicking “red spots”. The aim is to leave the building, which is on fire, and go to the meeting point.

The VR video is a large file (150MB), so please have patience while downloading.

To play the VR video you need to have the latest Adobe Flash player installed on your device.

Working at Height

The case is based on the participants watching a video where they’ll point out all the work environment issues they observe during the video. It may be needed to repeat the video to allow the participants time to make notes with their observations.

Risk Assessment 1

The case is based on the participants watching a video where they’ll point out all the work environment issues they observe during the video.

The safety and work environment issues demonstrated in the video are:

  • Disorder at work
  • Protective equipment for eyes and ears
  • Disorder on the workbench / workplace
  • Flammable liquids (lighter fluid, detergents, etc.) in the workplace
  • Flammable materials (cardboard, paper, etc.) in the workplace
  • Use of work equipment (angle grinder) without personal protective equipment (safety gloves)
  • Use of work equipment (angle grinder) without personal protective equipment (safety goggles)
  • Use of work equipment (angle grinder) without personal protective equipment (hearing protection)
  • Technical aid (angle grinder) without guard and handle

Risk Assessment 2

The case is based on the participants watching a video where they’ll point out all the work environment issues they observe during the video.

The safety and work environment issues demonstrated in the video are:

  • Flexible wire trapped in a closed door – predict problems/risks
  • Faulty technical equipment – (bent leg of an aluminum ladder)
  • Technical equipment – (Power drill without dust extraction attachment)
  • Drilling near power cables – predict problems/risks
  • Personal protective equipment – gloves, safety goggles, ear protector, dust mask
  • Personal protective equipment – shoes, safety shoes, loose fitting shoes on ladders
  • Ladder positioned behind a door– predict problems/risks
  • Flex repaired with tape – inappropriate solution

Working on live switchboards – risks and safety

The case is based on watching a video which deals with several safety issues:

  • Dead working
  • Live working
  • Protective gear
  • Insulation
  • Tools
  • Replacement of RCD
  • Risk assessment and metering
  • Short circuiting and consequence

The student handout contains the following tasks:

  • What are the requirements for tools that will be used when working on live switchboards?
  • Name some PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) and when to use PPE.
  • Explain how a risk assessment for working on a live switchboard would be carried out?
  • Do you always follow the safety precautions demonstrated in the video? Why not??
