Safety cases.

The project consortium compiles online multimedia safety cases (video, sound recordings, and photos) for training risk assessment.

Risk Assessment 1

The case is based on the participants watching a video where they’ll point out all the work environment issues they observe during the video.

The safety and work environment issues demonstrated in the video are:

  • Disorder at work
  • Protective equipment for eyes and ears
  • Disorder on the workbench / workplace
  • Flammable liquids (lighter fluid, detergents, etc.) in the workplace
  • Flammable materials (cardboard, paper, etc.) in the workplace
  • Use of work equipment (angle grinder) without personal protective equipment (safety gloves)
  • Use of work equipment (angle grinder) without personal protective equipment (safety goggles)
  • Use of work equipment (angle grinder) without personal protective equipment (hearing protection)
  • Technical aid (angle grinder) without guard and handle

Risk Assessment 2

The case is based on the participants watching a video where they’ll point out all the work environment issues they observe during the video.

The safety and work environment issues demonstrated in the video are:

  • Flexible wire trapped in a closed door – predict problems/risks
  • Faulty technical equipment – (bent leg of an aluminum ladder)
  • Technical equipment – (Power drill without dust extraction attachment)
  • Drilling near power cables – predict problems/risks
  • Personal protective equipment – gloves, safety goggles, ear protector, dust mask
  • Personal protective equipment – shoes, safety shoes, loose fitting shoes on ladders
  • Ladder positioned behind a door– predict problems/risks
  • Flex repaired with tape – inappropriate solution

Working on live switchboards – risks and safety

The case is based on watching a video which deals with several safety issues:

  • Dead working
  • Live working
  • Protective gear
  • Insulation
  • Tools
  • Replacement of RCD
  • Risk assessment and metering
  • Short circuiting and consequence

The student handout contains the following tasks:

  • What are the requirements for tools that will be used when working on live switchboards?
  • Name some PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) and when to use PPE.
  • Explain how a risk assessment for working on a live switchboard would be carried out?
  • Do you always follow the safety precautions demonstrated in the video? Why not??
